After arriving at MWC 2018 to introduce the Nokia 1, its first Android Oreo (Go Edition) smartphone, HMD Global has now launched it in India, one of the emerging markets the Android Go program is targeted at. This is the second Android Go handset to launch in the South Asian market after the recently announced Lava Z50. HMD Global has priced the Nokia 1 at Rs. 5,499 ($85), while it can also cost as low as Rs. 3,299 ($51) after deducting the Rs. 2,200 cashback offered by a local carrier Reliance Jio. Being an Android Go smartphone, the device will come running Android 8.1 (Oreo) out of the box with certain software tweaks and special apps meant to make the most of its entry-level hardware.
The Nokia 1 is a basic smartphone that sports a 4.5-inch IPS display with an FWVGA resolution of 854 by 480 pixels, which is flanked by regular-sized bezels, while its Android system navigation buttons are of the on-screen variety. It is powered by the quad-core MediaTek MT6737M chip that comes with the Mali-T720 GPU, 1GB of LPDDR3 RAM, and 8GB of flash memory with microSD card support. The 4G-enabled dual-SIM phone supports VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, and houses a 2,150mAh battery inside its 9.5mm thick body. The Nokia 1 will be made available in Warm Red and Dark Blue color options while its interchangeable back shells called Xpress-on covers will be available separately in Azure, Grey, Yellow, and Pink colors for a price of Rs. 450 ($7) a piece. The entry-level phone comes with a basic set of cameras with a rear-placed 5-megapixel sensor paired with an LED flash and a 2-megapixel sensor on the front.
Unlike many of the Nokia-branded phones launched in India last year, the Nokia 1 will only be available via leading offline stores starting Wednesday, March 28, whereas the Xpress-on covers will go on sale next month. Besides the aforementioned cashback from Reliance Jio, the Nokia 1 will arrive with a bunch of launch offers including an additional 60GB of data for Jio users, 20-percent discount on the first booking with Redbus, and an accidental damage insurance coverage for 12 months from Servify. Reliance Jio was also earlier rumored to make its own Android Go Edition smartphone, having supposedly partnered with MediaTek to do so. Launched last week in India, the Lava Z50 shares its basic specifications with the Nokia 1 and is priced at Rs. 4,400 ($68).
