A few months ago, Facebook announced its plans to start showing ads in Messenger. Now, we’ve got a glimpse at what they’ll look like. They’re huge and obnoxious. The moral of the story: never message brands.
According to a blog post from the company about the change, “sponsored messages,” as the ads are called, will appear in a module below your conversations list. This section will be similar to sections that show who is currently active, or your favorite contacts. However, as the image above shows, the sponsored messages will take up a lot more space than those sections.
Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to avoid seeing the ads. Facebook will only show the sponsored message section if you start a conversation with a company or brand first. So, if you never start a conversation with Wendy’s, you won’t get burger ads in your messenger app. At least in theory. Right now, Facebook is testing these ads in Australia and Thailand, though they may roll out to more countries over the coming months.
