At $1,500, the luxury smartwatch that Tag Heuer unveiled for last year's holiday shopping season was expensive, but this year's version takes the cake.
The solid gold timepiece costs nearly $10,000, according to Hodinkee, and is simply called "Connected." Forget about buying it on Cyber Monday: this watch is so expensive and produced in such small quantities that it's only available in stores.
The Connected sports a dual-core 1.6GHz Intel processor, 1GB of system memory, and 4GB of flash storage for all of your Android Wear apps. It weighs in at just under three ounces with a 1.8-inch diameter. In addition to the 18-karat solid rose gold case, there's a sandblasted titanium bezel that resists fingerprints and a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal LCD display.
Tag Heuer says the 410 mAh battery will last a minimum of 25 hours between charges, and take one hour and 50 minutes to go from completely empty to full. Charging is accomplished with the included micro USB cable and wall plug.
The Connected is also water resistant. With an IP67 rating (the same as the iPhone 7$649.99 at T-Mobile), it should survive an immersion in shallow water of up to 30 minutes. But something tells us that the majority of its owners won't get it anywhere near the pool.
As for why Tag Heuer decided to up the price of its flagship smartwatch so drastically in one year, it may have something to do with the sudden lack of competition from Apple. The 18-karat gold Apple Watch Edition, which started at $10,000 and topped out at $17,000, was quietly discontinued in September.
