Black Friday shoppers beware: You may find some excellent deals on 4K Ultra-HD TV sets this year, but unless you’re careful, they may not have the features you need to get the true ultra-HD experience.
Nowadays, shopping for a TV is more complicated than ever, and if you want more than just a good deal—a TV that’s future proof, for instance—read on.
Here’s what to look for when buying a 4K TV this Black Friday, or throughout the Holiday shopping madness:
1. Make sure it’s actually 4K.
2. Make sure the TV is UHD Premium. Accept nothing less.
To be considered UHD Premium a TV must:
- Have a display resolution of at least 3840 x 2160
- Have 10-bit color depth or higher allowing for 1024 shades of each primary color (many TVs have a lower 8-bit with 256 shades)
- Have a display that meets a minimum brightness, making blacks darker and whites more pronounced
- Wide color gamut, or the ability to show at least 90% of the P3 color gamut
- High-dynamic range enabled
- 3. HDR is a huge deal. Make sure your TV has it.
